The PLACED Academy is a free programme focused on developing your skills, aspirations and confidence whilst supporting you in accessing professional careers. During the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities and events with creativity and collaboration at the heart of all our activity.
The first programme took place in 2019 as a nine month programme of activity. In 2020 and 2021, the programme was delivered online in response to Covid-19 restrictions, with a range of formats.
Below is an overview of the type of activities you can expect in the Academy. Please note, the detail will depend on the format of the programme which will be developed each year in response to Covid-19 restrictions.
Summer Holiday Programme: You will work as a team on creative design projects over several days. We’ll cover planning, regeneration and architecture and learn professional design skills.
Tailored support: We’ll help you to identify your individual aspirations and develop a programme of support. You’ll be supported by professionals and students from the sector throughout the programme. There may also be an opportunity for mentoring on some programmes.
Design Workshops: Hone your design skills through regular mini-design challenges, including developing a brief and identifying clients, designing solutions using drawing and model making and presentation.
Skills Development: Work with the PLACED network to develop the skills you need for the next step of your career, including activities such as model making, sketching, Photoshop and presentation skills.
Professional Development Sessions: Advice on writing CV’s and personal statements, portfolio advice and interview preparation.
Research and Development: Focus on the things you are really interested in with the option of undertaking independent research projects.
Graduation: Join your fellow participants, Partners and Sponsors to celebrate your success and mark the beginning of your next steps. All graduates receive a certificate.
Throughout the programme, you will be supported by our fantastic network of Ambassadors, built environment professionals and students. Our Ambassadors include architects, planners, interior designers and landscape architects. You will work alongside them, gaining a unique insight into careers and study routes in an informal, practical way.
